It’s not something everybody knows, but there is a vigorous zone of experimental electronic and improvised music running from Egypt across Israel, Lebanon and the rest of the Middle East. As early as 1944 there were musique concrète (concrete music) experiments carried out at the Middle East Radio studios in Cairo. Mahmoud Refat, sound artist and musician, is now a driving force behind the vivid experimental music scene in Cairo. He is the founder of 100COPIES, a label that is focusing on experimental music, and also of 100LIVE Music Festival and 100RADIO Station. When Refat releases his own solo CD:s it’s usually at other labels, well established in this area of music, as Staalplaat.
